Greenwich Field Hockey Club is a community. Our success as an organization relies on this community continuing to be a place where we all can come together to play, make connections, and build for the future. To do this, we need to create spaces that are welcoming, inclusive, and inspiring.

Our History

The club was established sometime between 1956 and 1959 by Allan Woods as an offshoot of another New York club: Rye FHC. Both were exclusively men’s clubs at the time. Rye grew as a club and, instead of creating a second team, Allan formed Greenwich FHC and became its first president. Allan also served for a while as secretary for the Field Hockey Association of America (FHAA) – an organization created in 1930 to administer and facilitate men’s hockey in the US – and played on their A team.

The following (men’s) clubs are listed as members of the association in 1959:
Westchester FHC
Rye FHC
Merion Cricket Club
Baltimore FHC
New York FHC
Greenwich FHC
North Jersey FHC
Metropolitan Tennis and Hockey Club

Greenwich has been going strong since our founding and by 2008 had grown to have three men’s teams and two ladies’ teams. With the top two men’s teams dominating the league table it was decided that a new club be formed to diversify the talent and create greater competition in the league. New York City Field Hockey Club was born, headed by Danny Hayden, a player from the men’s first team along with a number of other players from the 1st and 3rd teams.

Today GFHC still have four teams in the NEFHA league. We also lead our social pick-up sessions that are attended by players across the league as well as new players making their way into the city, making these games one of the driving forces behind recruiting for our teams, seeding into other teams in the league, and growing our network of hockey lovers.

We are honored and humbled to be the entryway into growing the Field Hockey community in the city, as well as excited to welcome anyone who needs a fun group to hang out with that celebrates diversity, friendship, and sport.
